Microsoft Y2K DHCP Issue

Road Runner customers who use Windows 95 and 98 may be experiencing an issue with connectivity due to a Y2K problem in the Windows 95 and 98 Operating Systems.

Symptoms of this issue include a loss of connection, where rebooting restores service. This is caused by a glitch in the way that dates are read by Windows after 03/01/2000. The Windows Y2K patches will solve these issues. PLEASE NOTE: According to Microsoft, if you find that need to reinstall Windows 95/98 in the future, or reinstall/MODIFY any networking components, this patch may need to be reinstalled.

Any possibility, in your opinion, that Roadrunner is simply yanking everybody's chain and blaming Microsoft for their own problems?

My experience with most vendors is it's always the other guys fault until proven otherwise. It's possible that's going on here too...

Yeah, this happens in the hardware world as well, especially where the published spec was silent about some little detail, and two vendors found it cheaper for them to handle it different ways. So the chips don't talk to each other, and hang each other.

I bet in the hardware world it's much like software. If you're Microsoft or Intel, the *other* guy did it wrong and has to pay for the respin.

In this case, Road Runner might be right. My sister in law uses RR and was on the phone with me today with this very problem. She never did the Y2K upgrade for Win 95. I walked her through the download and upgrade and it did solve the problem. So, I'll give MS a pass on this one.

Of course, I told her to do the upgrade last September.
