Digital Zoom and 3 Megapixal Cameras

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I understand (I think) that digital zoom (as opposed to optical zoom) works by cropping the middle section of a photo and expanding it to fill the original picture's size, without adding any real digital information. This results in a loss of resolution when compared to the original picture, and not very satisfying. However, if the original picture was a 3+ megapixel, would the digital zoom be more useful, producing a picture still in the 1+ megapixel range?

Yes - but...
What a waste of pixels! If you tend to use the zoom a lot then you would be much better off saving money and buying a lower resolution camera with an optical zoom.
