Can RESOLUTION be trated as AREA?

After studying a book about digital photography (resolution), I am still curious about this issue. To specify the resolution usually 2 numbers are used. For instance, 640 x 840. Let's use AxB. First question, if one has a camera with a maximum resolution of 600 x 800. When a picture is downloaded and opened using any software, what isthe direction for A and B. If I am right. Can I interpret resolution as AREA. (second question). I think I am in the right direction. If I have 6 picture and the resolution is 600 x 800 each,If I stitch them without overlaying them (3 up and 3 down); Will I get a picture, let say panoramic picture (in the screen),with a resolution of ( 2A x 3B) or (2 times 600 X 3 times 800)? In other words, the new picture will be of 1200 x 1800 (Third question). In conclusion, Do I need to sum up the resolution A and B.?

Answers

This is the number of pixels in each dimension, vertically or horizontally. Which is which? It depends on how you hold the camera. With most cameras, held normally, the longest dimension is the horizontal one. The total number of pixels will be 600x800=480000 pixels. In that sense, you might think of it as an area.

Last time I used a calculator, 3x800=2400. So your stitched picture will have dimensions of 1200x2400 pixels.
