I hope I explained it correctly to Yourdon's new forum

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

I could see that they were under the wrong impression about who created this forum and why. I hope I cleared it up for them (and said it right)

The people who have chosen to go there like the idea of having discussions with people who may not agree with their views, and the right for themselves to speak what they feel freely without the threat of being banned if they say something here or (elsewhere) that the mods here do not agree with.

Perhaps they feel that they should be allowed the freedom of speech that is taken for granted in this country. Also the fact that what a person posts on ANOTHER forum should not be the cause for censorship in this one. That not only restricts what they are allowed to say here, but puts a restriction on what they say anywhere because if it "gets back" to the mods here, then it can be used as justification to ban them. Personally I think it was pretty stupid to demand that others have to follow the mindset of the group, or be ostracized or banned, but to then make it clear that if that is not followed elsewhere (anywhere) on the web, has gone way too far. That was not stated, but the implication was pretty well expressed in the thread where the statement about kicking an anthill was the justification for banning. Before you get on with flaming me for speaking the obvious, stand back and think of how it looks to anyone who has just come upon the thread. Although there are some here who would like to-and have - demanded that that others think the way they are told to, I have a few of those posts saved, I don't believe all of the moderators believe this way. Perhaps it is just one or two who have bullied the others into going along with it. You should not let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch. After all...it is killing this forum before it has even gotten off the ground. Unless, of course, that is what you really want to happen, to make this fail so there will no longer be associations with some of the "rather odd" topics and members. Or maybe the goal is for a forum where everyone thinks the same and no one is free to post opposing viewpoints without being reprimanded or flamed or even banned for it.

Answers

I guess I could supply a link :o)

And the quote I was referring to;

It's nice to see opposing views. Without the majority of doomers to put down though, it will also be interesting to see how long they last.

Cherri:

I agreed with you over there [in one of my increasingly rare posts]. You will not need to go back to see. I pointed out the following: You made a logical statement; but it is a waste of time to attempt to reason with the Hellerites. It won't work. But a nice try anyway. How are things in sunny Seattle?

Best wishes,,,,,

I used the link you provided, Cheri, and got an error notice stating it had been deleted.

Cherri, that was a great post. It's always a good thing to take the opportunity to stand up for freedom of speech. If only one person sees the logic in your post, then it was worth it.

What a dull, boring world this would be if we all agreed on everything.

-- gilda (jess@listbot.com), March 04, 2000.

Sorry Cherri, it doesn't matter how eloquently you explained it. The folks at the newly narrowed down digs won't get to read it. It's been deleted!

Why? Darn you, girl, I TOLD you to stop doing that DOS-thingy! That's what gets folks banned. Isn't it?

What? You were kicking anthills??? For pity's sake! Give them a break. I know several members of the Society To Protect Ants, Aunts and Other Things. They are plenty upset to hear of all this anthill kicking.

Oh, I see. You were just expressing a thought. Now I see why the post was deleted. That falls under the "objectionable material" umbrella. That explains why your post got deleted @northkorea.com ( I LOVE that!).

Now, are you banned? Can you be re- educated?! D'ya care?

I'm still a doomer and I'm not giving up. I've been a doomer for more than twenty years. Too late to turn back now.

Cherri:

Was this posted as a reply to Steve Heller? Sounds the same. If so, it is still there. At least on my screen; but I am using the AOL browser; for all I know it could be showing what was posted last week.

Best wishes,,,,,

I think this is Cheri's post in this thread. It's about half way down. The new board is just hard to learn, for me at least. I thought I had been banned, but I am sure now I lost the material or improperly posted. How embarassing to think the cross posts on the water mains will show up under something totally unrelated. I feel like an idiot but will just keep on trying.

Gosh, everyone seems to be having more fun with the new housing arrangements than news or tech postings. What a week-end.

Z1X4Y7

Things are good here, it's cloudy and cool, just right to have the windows open.

We could do without the microsoft millionaires and all of the other high tech companies running up the cost of living here, but Bill Gates just gave millions to our school system which is desperately needed. Ken Griffey Jr is gone :o( so I'm a little depressed about baseball starting, the King Dome will be imploded in a few weeks to make way for a new football stadium.

With spring around the corner we will start having street fairs and lots of outdoor activities.

It's real quiet around here right now.

People still post there? How quaint.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), March 04, 2000.

It doesn't look like Cherri's post got deleted. It may have been a wrong URL. I did a "search" for Cherri on the new forum. Looks like all of her posts are there. Try it. Type in "Cherri".

Cherri, another thing we require on the new forum is that you need to know what you are doing if you are going to attempt HTML code. We'd like to avoid having trash posted by illiterate riff-raff in order to maintain our high professional standards. Nothing personal you understand, but I think this forum is more suitable for you.

Yes, Cheryl:

I went over there and was able to still see it. The links presented here were missing something at the end.

Seems to me the main point of this thread (that no one seems to have mentioned?) is that they've succeeded in creating an atmosphere where people EXPECT to have posts deleted and accounts removed if they "say the wrong thing" or express a PuC idea.

"...step out of line the man come and take you away, you'd better stop, hey children, what's that sound..."

Nice work, folks. Maybe you should rename the place to ChillBomb2000, and give it a logo consisting of a picture of a face with a padlocked zipper instead of lips.

If you've got the room, you can show it standing on eggshells placed on thin ice.

It really is absurd that they came up with a set of rules, but then turn around and shoot from the hip at anyone they don't like.

The "it's their party" claim doesn't cut it if they provide rules of conduct, and then cut you off at the knees even if you OBEY the rules.

What would happen to a RL host who invited people over for a party, and then dialled 911 to report trespassers, then had some of them arrested?

Of course, it ain't RL. It's just an exercise in hypocrisy.

If all we're going to do on this new forum is talk about Ed Yourdon's forum and cross-post their threads, we might as well keep it on Biffy. Do we really need two forums for this?

-- (Just a thought@" ".com), March 05, 2000.

Sorry, I guess I just don't pay enough attention. What is "Biffy"

Sounds interesting. What is the URL?

Thanks.
