I plan on purchasing aCanon XL-1 to shoot documentaries.As my budget is limited I want to purchase editing equipment that will allow me to put together 30-60 minute programs with smooth transitions and narration. Also do titling for purposes of information and credits.

Melvin, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with a Mac G4, and Final Cut Pro. It gives you broadcast quality editing for a budget price.
