Static Line: the best size?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Mountaineering : One Thread

I could get a screamin deal on 8mm static line off a spool from some dirt-suckin cavers (no offense Steve & Paul). Should I bother with 8mil?

well, there is nothing wrong with using an eight as a haul line or a second rope for rapping (tied to your main line). Hopefully it is at least the same length as your lead line, preferrably a couple meters longer. When rapping the thinner line will often times feed through a belay device faster.

I don't think 8mill is safe for climbing on. I can't think of any way to really use it either. No belay device is rated for stuff that small, atleast every belay device i've ever seen. Also 6mill pussik's might slip easilly on 8mill. I've never tried it, but it seems kinda sketchy to me. 8mill should make nice prussiks and safety line, but i wouldn't climb on it.
