Broad question, broad answer. If you consider that a camera works by using a lens to gather and focus light, a shutter to open/close and control the amount of light, and film to record the "picture"that is in the gathered light. Film goes through chemical changes caused by the light. Developing "fixes" or further converts the chemicals to then allow light to be passed through the film to "print" on more sensitive paper to get a picture.

A digital camera works the same way except that instead of film there is an electronic sensor that measures the light hitting the sensor and converts the measurement into a digital file in coded form that records color, intensity and location of the recorded information. This information can then be passed to the computer and the computer "processes" or reads the code to then display the picture. the information can also be sent to a printer to print the picture.

Depending on the camera and computer equipment, the camera can be hooked directly to the computer or "memory" storage devices of different types are used in the camera and then these are attached to a "reader" attached to or in the computer.

Just a different thought on storing pictures or downloading for keeping is to download from your camera directly into your vcr and storeing on video tape. I make a slide show on the video tape. Works great.Use a photo workshop if you have one in one of your computer programs and download and then you can work with your photos from the photo workshop. Most computers come with some sort of photo program.
