Sewage spills into Siuslaw at Florence treatment plant

FLORENCE -- About 180,000 gallons of partially treated sewage spilled into the Siuslaw River after an accident at the city's wastewater treatment plant.

City officials said the Thursday morning spill occurred when rags plugged a valve that was part of a temporary pumping system in use because of a rebuilding and expansion project.

City officials say they are taking steps to prevent a recurrence.

This is the 3rd or 4th significant coastal sewage spill in the last few weeks. This rate of major spills fouling otherwise prisitne coastal waterways is unprecdented.
