Printing monochrome on HP3000

greenspun.com : LUSENET : PosterShop Talk : One Thread

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get better monochrome (black only) output from PosterShop 4.5 printing to our HP3000CP printer?

Simply checking "grayscale" in the Printer Setup area of PosterShop makes the HP use K only, but results in washed out, banded prints. The ink also has a very strong magenta cast, so prints look brown.

The printer's self-calibration features would seem to rule out limited-gamut inksets (AFAIK, you can't use anything other than HP's CMYK inks in this beast).

In desperation, I have built really wacked-out CMYK files to try to get monochrome output, but that process is quite a struggle & almost impossible to avoid color "crossover" looks at various densities.

Anybody have any better ideas?
