Leap Day Problems Anyone? Other misc....

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Hi everyone. It's Leap Day, and our power company had no errors that I know of. Only one publicly reported problem with a computer program at one utility. Apparently Japan Nukes had a minor glitch (I'm sure y'all have seen the stuff in the news). I find the Japan thing a bit ironic--back in 1998, they supposedly didn't take the whole Y2k thing very seriously...I guess you reap what you sow.

Have any of you heard of any problems?

Now on to miscellaneous items:

The recent comments by Senator Bennett are interesting: Several countries had Y2k problems, but didn't report them publicly. I've heard a few anecdotes about some power outages on January 1 that could have been Y2k related...we'll probably never know for sure.

I attempted to get some post-rollover comments from a few forum regulars (marianne, Jim Smith and F. Snyder Gokey) that we hadn't heard from, but alas, they didn't respond to my e-mail. I guess they disappeared after the rollover.

Jim Lord says he will issue some kind of Y2k apology this week, on Michael Hyatt's site.

Although it's been said before, thanks Rick, for moderating this forum. It was the best open discussion forum for Y2k and power issues, bar none, on the internet. I wish you well on your future endeavors. And if I ever get up New Jersey way, I'll see if I can meet you and buy you a cold one...

well dgman... i haven't said anything because i really do not know what to say.

i am still trying to process the data.

actually, i have never been so wrong about anything in my entire life and i am still encountering difficulty in determining exactly where i went wrong.

to say that i was in good company is not exactly comforting to either my psyche or my wallet.

but, i will say this... i learned an incredible amount that i had never before thought necessay for my survival and i have also gained much from rick and this forum.

all in all i am quite glad that things went as well as they did... we are indeed a spoiled and complacent society. that we would not have coped well with the anticipated adversity is not a question in my mind.

one thing i have learned by living through the y2k non event for the past two years is that i will never depend on the system to sustain me ever again. there is a lot to be said for self reliance.

i wish everyone well and hope that it is never necessary to put into play the skills that i developed while preparing for y2k.
