Waddaboudit, dude? Any word from the local health authorities about long term effects from last year's N.C. hurricane woes?

Floyd's effect upon rivers and fish has not been as bad as anticipated.

Easley Shuts Down Hog Farms for Alleged Environmental Violations

(WRAL-TV) -- Some North Carolina hog and poultry farms are temporarily out of business. Attorney General Mike Easley shut down four farms Monday for alleged environmental violations.

The farms are located in Orange, Pitt, Greene and Jones counties.

Easley says all of the farms have been cited for high lagoon levels and for allowing waste to discharge into surface water.

"What they need to do, and what we've encouraged them to do is to bite the bullet and depopulate the farms until they can get the lagoon levels back down to permit levels," says Easley.

The Attorney General says the farms have 24 hours to present a plan to get into compliance.

Easley says this is just the beginning of a crackdown on livestock pollution, expecting more farms to be shut down later this week

If you have enough room, raise a pig yourself. That way you know what they are fed,and thus what you eat. They aren't hard to raise, but you need a strong fence! I was against using an electric fence untill three flower beds were rooted up and hubby and I were outside at two in the morning trying to coax our four-footed garbage disposals out from under the house! Electric fence seemed beautiful after that. It came in handy one day when my car battery was dead too. I was able to jump start my car from the electric fence battery!
