Which of the following restrictions could you best tolerate: leaving the country permanently, or never leaving the state in which you now live?

Also, why? And those of you who don't live in the US, feel free to make a mental conversion to make the question more valid for you.

this is a really tough question for me! i'm leaning toward staying in the same state, wisconsin, because i really love my house, and madison. milwaukee is one of my least favorite cities, but at least it's available for big-city excursions. i'd hate to never be able to travel to other places, but i think i'd hate being barred from the US even more. there are lots of things wrong with the US, but i'm familiar with the way things work and, for the most part, i like it here.

Well, if the choice comes down to (a) never leaving the borders of Oregon or (b) being mobile throughout all the rest of the world beyond the U.S., I'd have to go with (b). Although Portland and Oregon are the finest places I've ever lived, there's a *whole* lot of the world I want to see out there. Besides, there's Canada, which is America without the guns. :{)

wow! it's a good thing i live in Michigan now instead of Rhode Island where i grew up! i would have HAD to say leave the country, since i would be restricted to a 45-minute drive maximum before turning around!!

I love Michigan, though! You can drive for 11 hours and still be in the same state! Plus there's a lot of wilderness here, and i like wilderness. The only thing i really miss as i live here is the lack of beautiful old buildings that i got used to in Providence. Architecture here is mostly dull.

I would hate to have to make a choice like that. I love traveling all over the place when i can find the time.
