size of mainecoon cats?

I want the largest domestic cat available. It must be a short hair cat if possible. What is the size, weight and disposition of the mainecoon cat? We have a mixed breed cat(male). Would a mainecoon cat pose any problem?

What I found reserching the maine coon is that the male averages 12-18 pounds while females are more likely 8 to 12. Don't let the weight fool you though. I had a cat that was 24 pounds but most of it dragged along the floor, she was by no means big, just fat!! The maine coon is a large cat. The maine coon is considered a long hair cat but does not have an undercoat which makes care easier and matting less likely. Mainecoons have a reputation for getting along with other pets. The are known as the gentle giant. I recently made my decision and ended my search. I have a 15week old male "Jasper" or Jaz for short and so far he is everything the breed is suppose to be. Curious, affectionate, likes to follow us around the house and likes to play with toys and his water. I recommend doing a search on mainecoon and reading all the info available through the web; it seems to be accurate. Additionally it would not be a bad idea to attend a cat show if you can find one somewhat local. Good luck.

Mainecoon cats are absolutely wonderful. I have a three year old, 14 pound girl and she is the light of my life. Mainecoons tend to act more like dogs than cats. They are like dogs and less like cats because they will follow you around, lick you continuously, and even "talk" to you in little short sounds. They are also very robust-- long and muscular and are among the most beautiful of cats. They are very attentive, intelligent, and friendly to all people and most other pets (after they get use to them). I highly recommend a mainecoon cat to you. Mine has been the greatest joy to me.

I have a 10 year old silver tabby male Maine Coon as well as two other cats, one of which is also long haired. Maine coons can be a lot of work and tend to have a lot of fur that falls out on the carpet. As for size, Custer is a solid 20 pounds. He has become my little dog who loves to be by my side day and night. My husband and I love this cat and he has been a wonderful addition to our family. I would recommend the Maine Coon to any one who is looking for a large, loving, and trilling friend!

I have a 15 month red Maine coon that is a whopping 20 lbs!!! Not fat just big.Having had cats for 30 yrs, this is the best one ever. We take him to our weekend house every week and he never utters a sound in the car. He loves water.. opens the shower doors and gets in. This is without a doubt the best of the large breeds, loveable, talkative, beautiful. What more can you ask for?? The best tool for grooming is a small metal flea comb.
