I recommend ASUS 8x DVD-ROM!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I bought a new DVD-ROM/CD-ROM yesterday made by Asus(AsusTech) 8x. For anyone whose interested I found so far that it will:

- play multiregion DVD (but you need multiregion SW player) - DeCSS can rip the DVD vob tracks no problem - play VCDs, both original and CD-R - reads CD-RW Multiread format (where CD-RW behaves like a floppy with a burner) - Digital audio extraction works fine from an Audio-CD - has a working SPDIF (stereo) digital audio output for my sound card

So, if you're shopping a round for a new E-IDE ROM drive, I think that this is excellent. I heard there may be a new version coming from the store, maybe a SCSI version.

Guy all you need to do now is hook it up to the RealMagic Hollywood Pro Mpeg decoder card and your really in business.

I've just bought the RealMagic Pro decoder card and it works better than any software decoder I've used - it also reads some VCDs that software players had trouble with such as The Police music video.

The decoder card does affect the quality slightly of the Windows image - there is a little less definition and some effects especially on black text. This would not matter, but as I work with still images I may find it a problem later. In any case - good advice Ross, thanks.
