Fuji S1 use with Nikkor AF-S lenses

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have been trying to find out the answer to this very important question for some time now. No one seems to know or no one seems to care about it. For the person interested in a high resolution SLR Digital camera, the Fuji S1 seems to be a good less expensive alternative to the Nikon D1. However, if it is built on a Nikon N60 body without any changes to the bodies basic AF function, the S1 will not be able to AF with the new Nikkor AF-S (Silent Wave) lenses. The N60 uses only the screw drive method to drive AF lenses and unless I'm wrong, the AF-S lenses lack the screw drive coupling. I checked both regular AF lenses and AF-S lenses and the back of the regular ones have a screw that turns when you turn the focus ring but the AF-S lenses don't have any screw that I can see moving when I turn the focus ring on them. This is important to anyone who went out and bought the new Silent Wave lenses for "pro" level digital photography beacaus they will only be able to be manually focused with the Fuji S1 unless Fuji has some how changed the basic lens mount and AF method of the N60 body on which they base their "pop" level digital camera. Sorry for the long post but I think anyone with thoughts of buying the Fuji should know this or at least know the answer to my question prior to their purchase. Thanks for any help or insight you can give. Steven

Good point, Steven -

AFAIK, the N60 body used by Fuji is a standard N60, except for the innards provided by Fuji, and the extra bulge on the bottom for the AA batteries. Lens mount, etc should be the same as stock film-based N60s.
