Gasoline Barges on Fire on Louisiana River: 70,000 Bbls at Risk

Simmesport, Louisiana, Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Two gasoline barges are on fire on the Atchafalaya River, about 90 miles northeast of Baton Rouge, according to the Coast Guard. Two -- and possibly three -- of four barges carrying a total of 70,000 barrels of unleaded gasoline have been burning near Simmesport, Louisiana, since this morning, said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Jeff Murphy in New Orleans.

The fires will probably be allowed consume the fuel, rather than risk polluting the river with runoff from firefighting operations, Murphy said. Local authorities closed off a section of the river, which is not a major waterway, he said.
