Delta jet makes emergency landing at Newark Airport; no injuries

The Associated Press 02/23/00 11:34 PM Eastern

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A Florida-bound Delta Airlines jet made an emergency landing Wednesday night at Newark International Airport after experiencing unspecified mechanical trouble. police said.

Police from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said the plane landed safely at about 10:15 p.m., and no one was hurt.

Port Authority spokesman Alan Hicks said Delta flight 2455 from Boston was headed for Orlando, Fla., when it diverted to Newark due to a report of mechanical difficulty.

Hicks said once the plane was on the ground, there were no obvious signs of trouble, but the plane was still being checked out.

There were 18 passengers, plus the crew on board the Boeing 737.

IMHO, due to so many problems with MD-80s and other types of planes in recent weeks, TPTB will probably use the term "unspecified" more and more as a reason for delays, detours, cancellations, etc.

...they will NOT fall from the skies...

The last 2 reports today didn't divulge what the mechanical problems were - is this going to be the trend?
