Nikon bayonet mount - plastic?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Just a simple question on Nikon bayonet lens mount. I was told gray market Nikon mounts may be of plastic material but I was under the impression all Nikon mounts are constructed of steel. Am I correct? Thanks

That's obviously not true! Grey market (parallel import) cameras are essentially cameras imported privately from cheaper sources rather than directly from the manufactuerer or the official distributing agent. By bypassing the official route, grey market cameras, which are exactly the same products as their regular couterparts, can be sold more cheaply but they don't have the benefit of warrantees and may sometimes have minor defects. There's no such thing as a down- graded camera specially meant for the grey market, and, as far as I know, all Nikon SLRs come with metal lens mount.

I don't believe Nikon has ever made a plastic lens mount. However. AFAIK, Nikon's metal mounts are not steel, but hard chromed brass. May be some one can correct me if I am wrong.

At least the mount of TC-20E converter is chromed brass. So many of us have filed them. Ilkka

Who starts these stupid Urban Myths?

The body mounts of Nikon cameras are stainless steel, the lens mounts are chromed brass, full stop.

A few lenses have plastic lens mounts, but this applies to both the gray-market and "official versions". Some lenses used to have metal lens mounts but now are produced only with plastic lens mounts. If the lens is metal it is chromed brass. To the best of my knowledge all manual focus Nikkors have metal lens mounts.

The only Nikon SLR body with a plastic mount is the APS Pronea S camera. All other Nikon body's have steel lens mounts.

Urban Myths...?

I have a Nikon F100 - the supposedly professional comera.

It has a chromed brass body to lens mount.

I know.. the chrome is wearing out!
