HELP! Lost my y2k files this morning.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I am using Windows 98, and among my "favorites" that are bookmarked, is the folder marked "y2k", and in that folder are sites such as this forum, the plant status, oil reports, and other preparation sites, such as how to make tire sandals, recipes, etc. etc.

This morning I got on the internet, my home page came up, I clicked on "favorites" and the list appeared as usual. I clicked on "earthquakes" and nothing happened. So, assuming that they were having trouble, I went on to Mailcity, but again, nothing happened. So, I clicked on Y2K, so I could go to this site and see if anyone else had reported trouble. Again, nothing. So, I went back and clicked on "earthquakes" again.

And then, right before my eyes, the little yellow folder and the words "y2k" disappeared from the list! Went to the other favorites list, and it was gone from it also.

How could this happen??? Went to the recycle bin, and it wasn't there. So, I went to history and got to this site that way.

Is there any other place where I can look for this file?

Any information will be appreciated! Thank you...

Margo

Can anyone give me an idea of what might have happened? And any way to get this stuff back...seems like it has to be in the computer, somewhere, because I certainly did not delete any of it!

Answers

You've got a very smart computer. I had to delete all the Y2K sites by hand. You're lucky!

Margo,

Go START-FIND-FILES OR FOLDERS and do a search for Y2K in NAMED.

Ah, the mysteries of Windoz.

How about your Temporary Internet Files subfolder?

-- Brooks (brooksbie@hotmail.com), February 22, 2000.

...@...I never thought about it that way! But I just read Chuck's letter, and sudddenly I realized, "Maybe my computer is helping me get weaned!!" all at once! Speaking of John Lennon, didn't he also write about "Cold Turkey"??

John, I went to start, and found "Favorites", and it's missing from that list also. How do I do a search from there?

Brooks, how do I find the Temporary Internet Files subfolder?

By the way, sorry if I seem dense....still learning!

Also, by the way, everything seems to be working fine, now...can click on any "favorites" site, and it goes there quickly. It's like once the y2k folder disappeared, everything else went back to normal!

Margo, I only "find" it for purposes of deleting the files occasionally. (I may or may not be deluding myself that this is a security measure.) So I don't know if the following description will help.

On my machine that would be... "Start", then "Find", then "Files or Folder". Then type in "Temporary Internet Files". For me, that produces a listing which includes a Folder by that title. Click on the folder. It should give you a listing of all the files, including URLs that you have visited since perhaps the last time you purged that folder. (I have no idea how "temporary" the listing is.)

If you browse a lot on a bunch of subjects, then your y2k links will be mushed in with everything else, but maybe you'll see some beloved ones to glom onto. At the least, it could be a painful display of all the time you spend with your computer. ;-)

Good luck!

Margo, was your Y2K folder in the favorites folder when you did the FIND and it just doesn't work?

If not, it isn't in your recycle bin is it?

If not, I am not sure what else I can suggest except start hunting for your 'neighborhood' computer geek. < vbg >

this is really odd...Brooks, I went to start, then find, and did a search, and there were the icons for all the links I'd lost...so, I clicked on each one, put them back on the "favorites" list, opened a new Y2K file, then went to organize them, so they'd all be in the same file, like they were before.

The y2k file is there, but when I click "move", and then go to click on the little file that says y2k, it disappears! And I can't move them into a file that doesn't exist!

Maybe I'm just overlooking something really simple, but on the surface, it seems funny...

John, I just realized what you meant when you said, start, find, folders, etc. I thought you meant go to start and find the folders. Then I read Brook's note, and saw for the first time the "find" button! Anyway, like I said, I found all the lost files, and put them back on my favorites list, but when I go to organize them into one "y2k" file, the file that says "y2k" disappears!

Oh well, at least I found them, and got them individually on the favorites list again....I especially wanted all the recipes!

thanks to both of you for all your help!! And thank you ...@...for the laugh!

This happens to me about twice a year. I don't know if it is because I am constantly working on the computer or what? I use windows 3.1 and Netscape. I have saved my butt many times by saving all bookmarks or favorites on a backup disk(s). I personally use 3 separate disks so if one disk is corrupt there are others. I save at the end of each session where I have bookmarked anything. Whatever else goes wrong you can get back all those hours of research sites. I have about 6 years worth. I also use multiple bookmark folders using #1, #2 etc. and pull up for a home page whichever I need for the research I am doing. Best advice you'll get is SAVE TO DISK daily as needed!

Ha Ha Ha....not really sure what happened to yer stuff, but versus going thru the whole start menu thingeeee.....there's another way to check yer stuff/ 'puter. Right click on the start button...left click on explore... and scroll down to temporary internet files....... but better still------go to history, ...left click, and open each of the folders. This will take you to any and all sites that you have visited...(Internet Explorer) If you are using IE, you can set your options for how long yer 'puter will hold these records. Oh yeah! these folders are listed under Windows. Hope this is of sum assistance p.s. change the name of whatever folder ya wanna put yer stuff into , to anything BUT Y2K!!! the gremlins are out there! lolol.........Pat

Margo,

It sounds like you DRAGed your Y2K folder to the menu bar, at least that's what I think would happen (sorry, I don't want to try it!). if you have a "sticky" mouse button, it's easier to DRAG thinks than you would think. <:)=

This is your self-teachable moment to institute a regular backup habit. Such a program can only be begun when one is sufficiently motivated, such as you probably are, today.
