Spill cleaned up at Encore mill

February 22, 2000

SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- Saratoga County's hazardous materials response team was called to Encore Paper Co. on Monday when about 50 gallons of hydrogen peroxide spilled inside the mill, officials said.

No one was hurt and the 2:55 p.m. spill at the Route 9 mill did not require an evacuation, said Kyle Brock, the plant's director of human resources.

The solution spilled in an area of the plant where it is used to remove ink from waste paper, Brock said. A malfunctioning valve was cited as the cause of the spill.

Plant officials called South Glens Falls firefighters and the Saratoga County Hazardous Materials Response Team because of concern the solution could become flammable if it reacted with other materials, Brock said. It also can irritate the lungs in high concentrations.

"We wanted to take every precaution necessary. We wanted to have the experts," he said.

The solution was quickly diluted with water and cleaned up without any problems, he said. The company moved workers out of the area until the cleanup was completed.

The area was inspected by a representative of the county hazardous materials team after the cleanup, Brock said. ) Copyright 1999-2000 The Post Star. All rights reserved.
