Lufthansa grounds 26 Boeing 747-400s for inspection
The Associated Press 02/22/00 7:35 AM Eastern
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG grounded 26 Boeing 747-400 long-haul carriers for inspection today after discovering cracks in lines that carry firefighting agents to the turbine engines.
Lufthansa said it immediately informed Seattle-based Boeing of the problem.
The problem was discovered during routine maintenance of the jumbo jets, and Lufthansa said it decided to ground all the aircraft until the others have been inspected and the lines are replaced.
The grounding would result in flight delays and suspensions, Lufthansa said in a statement, without elaborating.
Barbara Murphy, Boeing spokeswoman in Seattle, could not immediately provide information on the reported problem.
