Channel 7 sustains Y2K glitch; still functioning

By Karen Garrison Special to the Kansan

The Newton High School administration wants the community to know events placed on cable television channel 7 will show the correct dates. The date and time bar that runs across the top of the screen shows the incorrect year because the equipment is too old to be Y2K compliant, but that will not affect information entered into the system about upcoming events.

Chrissy Brenneman, local office manager for Multimedia Cablevison, said there is a way to remove the date and time bar from channel 7 but her company and the school are concerned about not providing the correct time to cable viewers. She said the company has investigated replacing the equipment, but the new equipment would not include a time and date bar feature.

Channel 7 is licensed to Multimedia Cablevision Inc. of Newton but NHS has volunteered to place information on the channel. Upcoming events may be publicized on channel 7, without charge, by filling out and submitting a request-to-broadcast form to NHS at least two weeks prior to the broadcast date.

Forms are available at NHS and may be mailed to Newton High School, 900 W. 12th St., Newton, KS 67114.
