Hydraulic problem forces airliner to return to S.F. Airport Mercury News Staff ReportA jetliner carrying 179 passengers and crew members made an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday afternoon shortly after it took off for Baltimore and then experienced a mechanical problem.
United Airlines Flight 222 reported a problem with its hydraulic system shortly after it departed at 2:50 p.m., according to airport duty manager Dennis Neves.
He said the plane circled over the ocean to burn off fuel before making a safe landing at 5:15 p.m.
The nose-wheel steering mechanism on the Boeing 757 was inoperative, so the plane was towed off the runway, Neves said.
The 174 passengers were booking alternate flights Saturday night.
