First image post: unfocused and overly contrasty?

...assuming I can even get it over here.

I shot this last summer. Contax S2 with 50mm Zeiss f1.4. FP4Plus in PMK pyro. Ilford MGFBWT. Slight selenium just to archive it. Lotsa magenta filtration. The scan kinda sucks, but hey it was free...any advice?

Shawn, I think this is a really nice shot, and the softness doesn't hurt at all - what seems to distract me ( and this is strictly a personal pet-peeve ) is her arm and top-of-head being cropped a little too close. It just interrupts the moment, to me. As I said tho', it's a personal thing of mine. Dubb

I think she likes me ?!

Dubb that's gonna drive me absolutely nuts now that you've pointed it out. I totally agree with you. I hope it is just the crop of the print, and I can move up a little on the neg. This print was difficult to dial in, too bad...shawn

...and you wish, man...

Shawn,

Scanning prints!?!??!! Shame on you!

But then, if you haven't your own scanner, you are doing quite well as it is... I agree, tho she is attractive, the other picture of her is (in my opinion) better because it defines that lovely nose of hers and clarifies her eyes. If heathens are passing her by in your porfolio it might be because her hair disappears into the background in the upper right. If the background were lighter perhaps they might not think "big hair" and notice her lovely face.

Can she travel to missouri? I think I need to practice my portrature....

Cool it, guys...you don't stand a chance...she's taken, ok??? FOR ME EXCLUSIVELY...:-)

terrific image, imho. far more life and impact than the second shot. 18% gray is the color of death in a b&w image.

The biggest problem to me is that the sky and the side of her face/hair run together. Changing your position so her head is framed by the darker parts of the background would give the appropriate seperation. Minor problem is that her right eye is a bit too dark--a reflector near your location to throw in a catchlight would help.

Overall, though, I think it's a successful image. I like the high contrast.
