Southwest area suffers temporary loss of water

BY ERIC STEINKOPFF, DAILY NEWS STAFF

Residents in the southwest area of Onslow County were without water for most of the day Wednesday as Onslow County repair crews worked to fix a large-scale leak..

Service was restored by 4 p.m., said Billy Farmer, facilities and utilities manager for Onslow County.

"The water is actually back on right now," Farmer said. "But when air gets in the lines, we have to blow out any impurities."

The problem was detected Wednesday morning.

"A cross-tie valve blew out along (U.S.) Highway 258 across from Blue Creek," Farmer said.

A crew was on the scene and worked rapidly to restore service to those affected.

Farmer said after the line was repaired, it had to be cleared. Workers open hydrants in order to get rid of any material in the line.

"We're creating a vacuum now as we blow out the line," Farmer said.

After the lines are cleared, it takes a little while for the water pressure to build and for service to return to normal.

"You might get a puff, puff, for just a second, when you turn on your sink faucet, but it's not harmful or anything," Farmer said.
