Diesel fuel spill kills fish in creek

02/18/2000

By The Associated Press

About 25 barrels of diesel fuel spilled into a creek in northwest Oklahoma City on Thursday, killing an undetermined number of fish, officials said.

A state Corporation Commission field inspector estimated that an inch of fuel spilled into the waterway near NW 122 and Western Avenue, agency spokesman Jim Palmer said.

A vacuum truck and heavy equipment were sent to the site to contain the spill, which affected a quarter-mile section, Palmer said.

The site belongs to Oklahoma- based Shawver Energy, Palmer said. The fuel was used to run the motors that power a drilling rig, he said.

The well at the site was drilled about three weeks ago and the rig was still on site but dismantled, Palmer said.

Yes, it is very sad. It is going to take a focused effort to clean these problems.
