Hydroelectric Design and Installation
April 1-2, $250
Don Harris, hydroelectric turbine designer and manufacturer, will cover all aspects of small hydroelectric systems for stand-alone and solar/wind hybrid use. This comprehensive class features an in-the-field hydro installation as well as site visits to other working systems. Day two will also include the opportunity for students to plan and design their own site-specific system.

Building with Bamboo
May 6, $75
Local architect Darrel DeBoer and builder Tim Kennedy will cover the use of bamboo as the strongest structural building material available. Recent innovations in joinery, preservation and code approval will soon allow the structural use of bamboo even without a structural engineer. A slideshow will survey what has been built worldwide, along with discussions on species selection, harvest, treatment, curing and hands-on demonstrations of proper tool usage, joinery, and truss design.

Introduction to Sustainable Planning & DesignNew
May 7, $125
Are you looking for innovative, sustainable design solutions for businesses, organizations, land use and development? In this dynamic workshop, Joanne Tippett of Holocene Design Co. presents several innovative techniques that apply the principles of sustainable development and creative thinking to ecological design. Through lecture, hands on exercises and practical examples you will be introduced to The Natural Step and Permaculture design. The Natural Step is a practical planning model for sustainability based on systems thinking and permaculture is an ecological design method focusing on the creation of sustainable human habitats. Examples will range from gardens and urban/rural design to business applications.

Natural PlasteringNew
May 20-21, $250
Learn how to create and apply beautiful, environmentally friendly plasters made of earth and lime. Used for centuries to protect and finish cob, strawbale and other earthen structures, natural plasters are both durable and non-toxic. Michael Smith, co-founder of the Cob Cottage Co., will lead this fun class in plastering an existing cob building at the Solar Living Center, using several different techniques.

Strawbale Construction
June 10-11, July 15-16, August 12-13, September 16-17, October 7-8, $250
This extremely populer class is taught by Pete Gang of Common Sence Design. Day one will cover fundamental design considerations, codes, and basic construction methods both through lecture and hands-on construction of a small load-bearing structure. Day two expands upon the concepts already covered and further explores foundation systems, framing for windows and doors, roof-bearing assemblies, roofing materials, plastering, and interior details.
ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR CLASSES. SIGN UP EARLY!

The Green Householder
July 17-19, $350

Day 1: Passive Solar and Ecological Design
David Arkin, Project Architect for the Solar Living Center, shares the basic tools to design your own sustainable dwelling. Course emphasis is on passive solar design features, and includes discussion of site analysis, energy-efficient design, cost-effective alternative construction methods, recycled and non-toxic materials, and an overview of renewable energy options.

Day 2: Efficient Heating, Cooling & Solar Hot WaterNEW
David Springer of the Davis Energy Group will introduce you to a survey of the most efficient methods available for heating and cooling both on and off the grid homes and small commercial spaces. He will cover sizing, equipment selection, the pros and cons of convective and hydronic/radiant heating systems, evaporative and night ventilation cooling, and ground-coupled heat pumps. The second half of the class will survey the most reliable and energy efficient techniques for providing hot water to your home. A variety of passive and active systems, including instantaneous gas heaters, will be discussed.

Day 3: Sustainable Wastewater Design
Dr. Bill Roley of the Permaculture Institute of Southern California and special guests will present a comprehensive look at on-site methods for treating and recycling grey and black water for an individual home or community scale use. Low-tech and natural living systems design, composting toilets, and permits will be covered, along with a tour of greywater, pond and reed treatment systems at the Solar Living Center and other nearby sites.
