which is best mpeg1 encoder?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I capture using Ati a-i-w pro agp 2x onto udma66 hd, no problem. I have been using Panasonic, Xing, DVMpeg and LSX encoders for AVI to mpeg, the results are best with LSX, apart from the lack of resizing the frames from 352*240 to 352*288.

I'd like to try the Heuris Mpeg Professional Encoder program, but cant get a demo from their website, so does anyone know where i can get this program? Demo or Licensed, it doesn't matter. And if so, what are reuslts likely to be?

Finally, which program can take my captured AVI's (ativcr2.dll codec) ie, 60 minutes = 1.7gig), filter them (depixelise etc,) and export them without altering the compression? So, avi @1.7 gig in and avi @1.7 gig out? Because this problem with filtering and spewing out a 4gig avi is infuriating.

Please help. Thanks a lot.

On the Heuris Mpeg Professional Encoder program, it only does cd-rom (PC) based video. It doesn't generate VCD compliant mpeg 1 files.

On the AVI problem what I suspect it that you are capturing using the Indeo 5.1 avi codec which is compressed. A avi using Indeo 5.1 @ 1.7 gigs after your filter saving as a non Indeo 5.1 would be about 4 gigs.

Andy, just a comment, you are obviously converting NTSC to PAL and even if you get the picture correct the 29.97fps to 25fps might be a problem. If you do a image conversion you will end up stretching the height, panasonic has an option to add black and that will be a better option provided you can get around the change in frame rate.

LSX has the option to crop with black, top & bottom so that will not solve the problem in the same way as the panasonic is capable of.
