PALM SPRINGS, California (AP) -- Three people suffered minor injuries when a pair of airborne planes clipped wings near Palm Springs International Airport.

"A couple of small airplanes bumped in the air, but they were able to land without any further incident," said Lewis Diaz, an operations officer with the Federal Aviation Administration in Los Angeles.

A Cessna airplane that was departing from the airport and an incoming Piper Cherokee clipped wings Tuesday about 5:30 p.m., Diaz said.

Three men from the Cessna, which made an emergency landing off the runway, were taken to nearby Desert Regional Medical Center.

They were treated and released Tuesday night after suffering minor bumps and bruises, said Ken Kraft, a hospital spokesman.

As a former 25 year resident of Palm Springs, Ca., it has always been an amazement to me and many others as to how or why this air port in the middle of town hasn't been the scene of many and serious accidents. Evidently it's the work of skilled pilots and the airport itself.
