Also interested in finding out "how" posters are interested in sustainability on the home, or even community front.

Will add my thoughts later.

My first interest is in determining if sustainability is possible.

In my mind and life population growth killed the concept of progress and with it the idea of sustainability. This drove me to abandon thoughts of "development", of increasing the size of the pie so that everyone could have more, have basic needs met.

In agriculture we have to rely on replenishment of essential minerals or production falls off. I find the asian production systems to be most enduring---small holdings intensively tended, integration of water dwelling organisms with land based production, return of nutrients via night soil.

The past year has focused my attention back on the home as an independent unit that can stand alone or as part of a system. It seems both a worthy goal and a fool's quest. Sustainability and self- sufficiency are not the same but except at a global level won't any sustanabile community have problems with resource flows?

david,

In another week or so, I'll sit down and write more comments about the kind of sustainability I personally would like to see adopted.

Whatever happens, this planet will need to transition into it, and it will not be an overnight process. Can't get the image out of my mind that complimentary-reliance rather than just self-reliance is perhaps a worthy goal.
