"deeds of the Nicolaitanes"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Christian Church : One Thread

Can anyone help me in determining what the "deeds of the Nicolaitanes" was/is all about?

(Rev 2:6 KJV) "But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate."

Thanks

Mark -

There are several explainations of that, based on history and on grammatical clues. Unfortunately, I don't have the documentation here with me at work.

Mark,

We don't specifically know who they were. There is speculation. The name is formed from combining "nikon" - to conquer, and "laos" - the people. Martin Kiddle is probably right in his views about the Nicolaitans. They were probably followers of Nikolaos, the "proselyte from Antioch" (see Acts 6:1-6). This view is upheld in the patristic tradition.

Glenn Bourne would espouse that the term is a general reference for people who were enemies of the faith, perhaps as compromisers or abusers of the Christian freedom. (Tower of Truth, pg. 21)

Finally found it!

NICOLAITANS (Nihk oh lay' ituhns) Heretical group in the early church who taught immorality and idolatry. They are condemned in Revelation 2:6, 15 for their practices in Ephesus and Pergamon. Thyatira apparently had resisted the false prophecy they preached (Rev. 2:20- 25). The Nicolaitans have been linked to the type of heresy taught by Balaam (Num. 25:1-2; 2 Pet. 2:15), especially the pagan feasts and orgies that they apparently propagated in the first-century church.
