"Warming the main turbine"

Add that to the list for euphemisms masturbation.

Hello from NC,

'Warming the main turbine' means that the plant engineers put hi- temperature, hi-pressure steam to the main steam turbine (that turns the generators that generate the electricity that you're currently using to read this message) to turn the engine slowly, in order to warm it uniformly (preventing warping the turbine blades and/or main shaft) before they bring it up to full operating speed. [If you think 'Warming the main turbine' is *hot*, go aboard a steamship sometime and ask the engineers to show you The Golden Rivet. They'll be glad you did!]

Oh, Loved that one about "warming the main turbine!" Now, would someone please spin one for me about the lore of the "Golden Rivit?"
