Why did Harry and Ruth live in a hotel? Why didn't they have a house or was living in a hotel like having an apartment?

During the time period (and even today in large metropolitan cities), many people lived in hotels as opposed to houses. Try not to think of it as a hotel, but as more of a retreat house (or even a spa). It was similar to living in a apartment and at the time was considered a respectable place of living. In Europe it was considered even more stylish to live in a hotel, but we are not really given specifics as to the type of hotel, but we are given a glimpse as to some of the characters who live at the hotel, so I am led to believe it to be a middle to upper class hotel.
