Three Workers Dead, Four Injured in Gas Explosion The Associated Press

HONG KONG (AP) - An explosion caused by a gas leak at a Hong Kong construction site killed three workers and injured four others Saturday, officials said.

Three men - aged 43, 50, and 66 - died after being hit by metal plates they were working with when the explosion occurred, a police spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity.

Four other workers were being treated for various injuries. All of them were conscious, but details of their conditions were not immediately known, the spokesman said.

The workers, who were not identified by name - were welding near pipes containing highly flammable gases. The pipes exploded and sent metal flying into the air, the spokesman said.

Fire officials were investigating what caused the gas leak."
