UNITED STATES TO ASK MEXICO TO LOWER OIL PRICES

Story Filed: Friday, February 11, 2000 12:58 PM EST

Mexico City, Feb 11, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) -- The U.S. government will seek Mexico's assistance in finding ways to reduce the price of crude oil, which has begun to affect the poor in the northern United States and lead to inflationary pressures, the Mexico City daily La Reforma reported Friday.

U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson said he would travel to Mexico in the coming days to meet with his Mexican counterpart, Luis Tellez, to request his help in finding ways to lower the price of oil.

"I not going to put pressure, but to ask for his advice on how to reduce international oil prices," Richardson said.

He pointed out that poor families in the northeastern United States could not afford to pay 600 dollars a month in heating bills.

Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela agreed to cut back oil production in May 1998 to bolster sagging international prices, and other members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) later signed the accord.

The price of a barrel of crude oil has risen from 16.23 dollars in March 1998 to last Wednesday's price of 29.43 dollars. EFE

BUT, I thought the price of northeastern oil was due to a critical shortage....

I wish they'd make up their minds and stop yanking the public chain.

Move south to Mexico, it's warmer.(wry grin)

The whole world knows the answer - "Use less Oil than is produced"

Problem is - The output is dropping and demand is increasing.

I cannot believe Bill Richardson (who is from New Mexico) said these words - He of all people should know the imbalance between the poor of Mexico and the "poor" of the USA.

Mexico should take care of it's own poor first, then worry about anybody else.(USA should be last in the list...)

Now, does any of the oil revenue trickle down to the poor in Mexico, that is a "whole 'nuther ball of wax".

This has got to be a joke. The rich beetle-driving Mexican families being asked to tighten their belt so that the poor Bostonian families can keep on driving their 40K SUVs to the local supermarket to buy a quart of milk. I know which finger I would be showing if I were Mexican.

This is incredible! Big american companies just on the other side on the border pay what? $1.00 $1.50 an hour? no benefits, poison people. The poor peons cant even afford to buy the things they make." Please senior-could you lower the price of your oil?" How can we exploit our own minimum wage workers if they cant buy gas to get to work? Maybe we should offer them some trinkets, like we did with NAFTA.( I pick coffee beans in de high mountains of Columbia so I know a leetle abow tis)

Jeesh,

This administration is sick!! The real warped situation has been $12 a barrel oil the last two years. If that price was anywhere near a sane level this massive uptick would not be happening. Richardson is just trying to protect the economic bubble and keep it from bursting until Clinton has exited.

Bubble? It's beginning to look more like a bowl full of jello. Richardson pokes a finger in, and it bulges somwhere else. Then Summers tries, and it envelopes Richardson. Meanwhiule the Dow continues it's merry way down toward a serious support line at 10335. Quick, Greenspun, er span, protect our plunges.

Got whipped cream?
