AIRLINE EVENTS SUMMARY II (revised 02-10-00)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hey, you guys will be the first to see this. I completed my new summary to update the thread I maintain on Hyatt's technoproblems forum. I just tried to post this there but am having problems posting it, so you guys will get it even before they do. Hope the formatting doesn't get too bad.

snip EXCITING NEWS!!!!!!

This is an updated, somewhat revamped AIRLINE EVENTS SUMMARY. I included all the actual reported events of which I am aware and condensed them and organized them again by date. Many of the links will no longer work, I am sure, however, most of the complete articles are posted under the thread entitled AIRLINE EVENTS SUMMARY here on Michael Hyatt's Technoproblems Forum. I am naming this compilation AIRLINE EVENTS SUMMARY II (revised 02-10-00). I will now post new events under this new thread. I would like the old AIRLINE EVENTS SUMMARY thread to be locked but to remain a part of the forum as it is the only place to find and read the complete articles. The old thread will remain a valuable source of information, but this new report should simplify getting the overall picture. Remember, I make no claims that these "events" are due to Y2K. This is a source of compiled information from various sources which I have credited wherever possible. The reader can draw his own conclusions. Some of the events are definitely not related to Y2K, however I have included all events as I become aware in order to make this a useful source of information to those interested. The list of incidents keeps growing so fast it has been difficult for me to keep up with it in the time I have available, however I have done the best I can and hope that this report will be helpful. Here it is!!!!!!!!

Response to AIRLINE EVENTS SUMMARY II (revised 02-20-00)

OOPs!!! That heading was supposed to say revised 02-10-00. Is their a SYSOPS that can edit that for me?

-- boop (leafyspurge@hotmail.com), February 11, 2000.

A great log of mishaps and emergencies -- and can't thank you enough boop for the effort represented in the compilation -- like marcia's work with the refineries. Just a few thoughts:

Again, here as there, the question must come up, as to how much the level of scrutiny has increased in the last few months, to account for the apparent increase in events. Marcia has had to deal with this criticism a lot. In your compilation, which deals almost entirely with commercial aircraft and not with private planes, that factor might almost be factored out and discounted, I think. IN other words, one might presume that commercial "airline events" affecting dozens or hundreds of people WOULD find their way into the news readily. Of course there should also be various FAA logs and reports that could be examined .... in your spare time!!!!

On the other hand, another thing that weights the statistics (improperly) AGAINST a Y2K-type explanation for the increase, is the inclusion of ATC outages and airport electrical problems back in 98 and 99. Excuse my seemin presumption here, but as useful as it is to keep a handle on those events, they are apples to oranges in a catalogue of "AIRLINE EVENTS". They are ground -related. If they were excluded it seems the escalation of events would be even more obvious, and the continuing threat even more intimidating.

Thanks for this.
