GOVERNMENT TO INVESTIGATE ATTACK ON PRESIDENTIAL WEB SITE

Mexico City, Feb 10, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Mexican authorities are planning to open a detailed investigation into the cyber attack on Mexico's presidential Web site, which was used to send fraudulent statements in the name of Ernesto Zedillo.

Sources from the president's office told EFE about the attack on the presidential Web site, which has been in operation since 1995 and was considered to be highly secure. The attack is the first of its kind since the Web site was first put on the Internet.

Officials indicated that on Tuesday several Internet users received a fraudulent e-mail message, allegedly sent by President Zedillo, about recent events at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Authorities said the text was similar to the message sent by Zedillo on Sunday, with only one altered paragraph and a mistake in the president's official seal.

Likewise, La Cronica newspaper reported that a computer hacker legally registered the name of Ernesto Zedillo with Internet service provider America Online (AOL), which gave him the "right" to send messages under that name.

The hacker demanded the president's office pay him 5,000 dollars to not slander Zedillo, a demand that was refused.

The hacker told Mexican authorities to not be surprised, because these kinds of actions are normal, and insisted that even the Vice President of the United States had paid some 20,000 dollars without complaining. EFE
