The inquistions were periods when the church (Roman Catholic) would try to purify the earth. They wanted every one to be of their same beliefs. They did this through forcing people who opposed their teachings and ways to confess to crimes they did not commit. Forcing often took the form of torture. If the person did not confess, he was tortured until death occured. Upon confession, the victim was often killed anyway. The most famous Inquisition was that of the Spaniards. It is believed that somewhere near a quarter of a million people were put to death at this time.
