I am doing a report on Edgar Allan poe in my 10th grade English class. I have to present a slide show on him including certain information. One of the questions I have to answer is 'What is the Inquisition?' and i have never even heard of that. Do you have any idea what that is? And how Edgar Allan Poe is tied in with this Inqusit

The inquistions were periods when the church (Roman Catholic) would try to purify the earth. They wanted every one to be of their same beliefs. They did this through forcing people who opposed their teachings and ways to confess to crimes they did not commit. Forcing often took the form of torture. If the person did not confess, he was tortured until death occured. Upon confession, the victim was often killed anyway. The most famous Inquisition was that of the Spaniards. It is believed that somewhere near a quarter of a million people were put to death at this time.
