This is on topic insofar as it demonstrates that the oil industry's well documented pattern of deliberate deceit surrounding spills and other events.Do you think the oil companies are reporting on all the spills that are happening or just the ones they can't hide?

BP cleans up Alice Springs spill

Oil company BP says it has retrieved almost 6,000 litres of petrol and diesel products from a contaminated spill site in Alice Springs.

The clean-up follows a spill at BP's depot in Alice, from a faulty underground pipe in 1997 and 1998.

The company waited almost nine months before it reported the leak and was fined $75,000 over the incident.

BP's Chris Doig says the company has tightened its procedures to ensure the incident is not repeated.

"I would say that it's a more diligent process in place, it's the same sort of process of checking stock in and stock out, but it's very diligent now," he said.

"I think we would not have a problem like this in the future without a major catastrophe
