Hi Shawn.

I don't know about online, but I would recommend the book "Making Faces" by Kevin Aucoin. He's this makeover makeup guy to the famous and the book is really informative for photogs like us. I often go over the book with the client to give her an idea or two. I was interested in learning a bit about it too, to help, you know, when the errant beast sits down before my lens. I've just found a makeup artist and have my first shoot with her assisting on Saturday. Let's see the difference it makes. She gets $50.00 a face - pretty cheap when considering the effort that goes into a custom portrait, don't you think?

I second the "Making Faces" book recommendation. That's exactly (and the only) make-up book I use. Reading it, you will at least become literate in the make-up jargon. So instead of looking silly and trying to play charades with the make-up artist on what effect you want, you can impress her with your knowledge of concealers, blush-ons, matte vs. gloss, kohl pencils, eye shadows, blending etc (speak passionately about these things as well as pretend you knew this stuff all your life, and you can probably raise some eyebrows... as the people around you try to quietly assess your sexual orientation ;).

...actually buying yor own make-up kit and trying the techniques hands on, well, that's another matter. It's not easy and sometimes downright scary (try applying eyeliner with a Kohl pencil). The more I know about make-up, the more respect I have for those who do it well. The flipside to this is that since you're into fashion (as am I), being able to do this stuff yourself would be a tremendous advantage.

This thread recommends Kevyn Aucoin's book and "How to photograph women beautifully" by J. Barry O'Rourke.

If Amazon qualifies as online, then look here and here.

Thanks guys. I did it the right way tonight. Got lucky with a good make-up artist, and didn't pay him a penny (just prints). Can't wait to see the results. ps KA's book is amazing.

How about sharing one of the images when they're done?

For sure. My friend still has my portfolio, so I can't put images up till I get it back, and when I preint these I'll get him to scan my favs. Just don't expect professional and magic work...I'm still learning, ya'know! (ps thanks to David Hou for helping me during the shoot.)

Hey Shawn,

No problems at all...hope the images turn out okay. Guess what I was think though: I thought you really should have fired off a shot of the security guy yelling at you...with the Metz on full power...

Yeah, I should'a just kept shooting untill he kicked me out physically. Always wanted to get along like the paparattzi (sp?). I've processed the shoot, and Corey, my make-up guy, did such an outstanding job.

*what* security guard are you guys talking about?

-- Roger Wong (rogerw@bigfoot.com), February 15, 2000.

I had permission to shoot in the underground/concourse/mall of one of the business towers on Bay St., not knowing that once you take one step over the boundery you are in another building, with different management. We got kicked out after I essentially made an ass of myself by telling the guard I had permission from building management. He was still an idiot though, wouldn't even let me finish my roll...well, maybe not an idiot, just overzealous with his job...
