Burst pipe cuts service to hundreds By Associated Press, 2/8/2000 11:42

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) A 12-inch main burst beneath a street, leaving hundreds of people in Eastchester and New Rochelle without water service for hours and sending torrents cascading around homes and into garages.

Robin Castaldo, a foreman with United Water Co., said the rupture of so large a pipe was rare, although a 24-inch main in Yonkers burst last month, causing water problems for tens of thousands of residents in neighboring Mount Vernon.

The burst pipe in Eastchester was detected at about 8 p.m. Monday. ''It's probably weather-related,'' Castaldo said. The Lake Isle section of Eastchester and a 60-block section of New Rochelle's North End were affected.

The company diverted water supplies around the main, and most customers had service back by midnight, spokeswoman Rebecca Long said Tuesday. The last 25 homes, along Wildwood Road in Eastchester, had to wait until 7 a.m., when the main was repaired.

Town crews spread salt on the sheets of water in hopes of preventing ice. The Fire Department checked that hydrants were still working.

Why are all these water mains breaking?

Don't know about elsewhere, but NYC has a lot of water main breaks periodically. The mains are 100 years old.
