need advice on hard disk cleaner

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I cant find a post from last week about good erasers, sweeps and shreadders for the hard drive. Someone said the free mit-pgp download was good.

I have Mcafee shreadder but after a few minutes a window appears saying "too many re-starts close running programs and start over"

So I closed everything and got the same results

Any suggestions

Yeah, McAffee will stick it to you once in a while. Once had to reformat my HD because of McAffee. Grrrrrr. Kinda put me off their products.

I like Norton's WipeDisk (part of Norton's Utilities). It has various levels of wipe, depending on how squeeky clean your HD has to be. Others may be just as good, but I never needed to try them. Sort of an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality.

Eraser/ Shredder: BC Wipe, freeware from ZD Net; Installs to Desktop as Shortcut, 1 to 7 overwrites on selected file.

Utility: Mejinix Fix-It 99 or 2000, PC Mag's Editor's Choice over Norton or McAfee. I've used all three, Fix-it is superior, particularly with Win 98.

Encryption: Cryptext, from ZDnet or Download.com; 121 Bit RSA Encrypt/ Decrypt Desktop Shortcut.

Try doing scandisk, then defrag, or McAfeee or Norton equivalents, first.
