Rage as water hitch persists

Nairobi (The Nation, February 7, 2000) - The water shortage in Mombasa has been worsened by unscheduled power interruption at the main Baricho water works, a source said yesterday.

Angry residents telephoned the Mombasa Nation bureau, demanding a statement from the government over the shortage. The people who called or visited the offices included residents of Changamwe west mainland, Mikindani, Miritini, Makupa, Kisauni and Mtwapa.

A senior official of the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation said the unscheduled power interruption affected their pumps at Baricho from 9 am on Friday to 2 am yesterday.

In a statement, the KPLC said the interruption started when a pylon carrying high-voltage lines was brought down by a bush fire started by villagers in Kilifi.

The power firm said that alternative power supply had been re-routed to the whole of Kilifi, except the most essential Baricho area, which supplies all the domestic water to Mombasa town.

Of course none of this is Y2K related. After all, the Third World came through without any problems!

But Eric, I'm sure you are being facetious. Of course it's y2k related. The Kilifi Fire Department's fire fighting equipment was down, due to imbedded chip problems, right?

I think squirrels around the globe are angry for being blamed on power outages, so now they're fighting back...setting fires, gnawing wires...oh my....it's a sad tail...I mean, tale.... ;)

Dee, you have a cute tale...
