PL Polarizer Filter - Circular or linear

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

I found a used 62mm polarizer filter in a second hand store. The filter ring has these words printed on it..PL polarizer 62mm Japan. Does anyone know if this is a circular or a linear filter and assuming PL is the brand name, does anyone know if they make quality filters? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks.

"PL" usually means "Polarizer." C-PL would mean "Circular Polarizer." Unless it said "C-PL" or "Circular Polarizer" it's linear.

The ultimate test is to hold it up to your eye and look at some nearby reflections. The linear type will cancel out reflections when viewed from both sides. Circular polarizers, however, only cancel out reflections when viewed from the correct side.
