MICHAEL HYATT'S SELF-RELIANT LIVING eNEWSLETTER Monday, February 7, 2000, Issue: 1

SNEAK PREVIEW

Many of you have written, wondering why you have not received a newsletter recently. For the past four weeks, I have spent virtually every spare moment revamping the Y2K Prep website. I have changed the editorial focus and completely redesigned the graphics.

I am proud to announce "Michael S. Hyatt's Self- reliant Living" website, The site is not actually available to the general public yet, but it will be in a few days. To get a "sneak preview," just go to http://208.176.248.150

My goal is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and resources you need to maintain your freedom, safety, and comfort without dependence on external institutions or infrastructures. In a word, to become more *self-reliant.*

In a few days, you will be able to get to the site by either typing in http://www.michaelhyatt.com or http://self-reliantliving.com. Either URL will take you to the same place.

EDITORIAL

Why pursue a lifestyle of self-reliance? There are at least seven reasons. You can read them here: http://208.176.248.150/editorials/whypursue.htm

THE VOTING BOOTH

No this isn't about politics; it's an opportunity for you to share with us your opinion. In this week's poll we ask: "What motivates you to pursue the self- reliant lifestyle?" You can vote here: http://208.176.248.150/voting/threats.htm

THREATS IN THE NEWS

Like almost everything else on the site, I have revamped the news section as well. I have now included news headlines and links in seven categories. (You will note a strange resemblance to the seven reasons outlined in my editorial.) The purpose of providing this information is not to promote fear but to create awareness and motivation for pursuing self-reliance.

Economic Indicators: - Gold futures surge 8%, sailing past $300 mark - BellSouth cuts 2,500 jobs - Fed raises key interest rate

SELF-RELIANT LIVING TIP

In this week's living tip I discuss a new concept called "Once-a-Month Shopping." Find out how it can save you time and money, while ensuring that you are prepared for whatever disruptions life throws at you. You can read the article at http://208.176.248.150/livingtips/101.htm

ASK MICHAEL

If I've been asked once, I've been asked a 100 times: "Why are so few Y2K glitches being reported?" In this week's column, I discuss three reasons. You can read the article at http://208.176.248.150/askmichael/101.htm

QUOTE-OF-THE-WEEK

According to John Koskinen, the Chairman of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion: "I don't know of a single person working on Y2K who thinks they did not confront and avoid a major risk of systemic failure." You can find this quote and a link to the original article on my home page at http://208.176.248.150

If you want to view the entire Quotes Archive, go to http://208.176.248.150/quotes/2000.htm

FACTOID

A malfunctioning computer system has led to thousands of Toronto public school employees working without pay or only partial pay since the beginning of the year. Checks are bouncing and many teachers can't make rent or put food on the table. You can find this quote and a link to the original article on my home page at http://208.176.248.150

SELF-RELIANT RESOURCES

I've just revamped the Recommended Reading List, adding several new titles that I think you will find helpful in your pursuit of self-reliance. I've also provided click-through links to Amazon.com, so that you can go directly to the books without having to look them up. You can find the complete Recommended Reading List at http://208.176.248.150/reading.htm

BACK ISSUES OF THE eNEWSLETTER

Last year I received repeated requests for back issues of my e-mail newsletter. Unfortunately, I didn't archive them. However, I have set up a new eNewsletter Archive. Right now you will only find this issue in it. However, in the months to come, you will be able to find and read all previous issues. Answers

With all due respect, Angela, since Michael was such a huckster selling Y2K hype and preps for a doomsday that never came, I'll pass...

-- FactFinder (FactFinder@bzn.com), February 07, 2000.

Yet another Y2K panic-mongerer, without a shred of shame, segues into alternate areas of advice-giving.

The gullibility of the masses should never be underestimated, and my faith in P. T. Barnum will remain intact if this site stays alive and this witless individual continues to nurse at the teat of suckerdom.

Sheesh. He must be a better man than I to have avoided killing himself over his prior nitwit publications wreaking as much havoc as they did in the lives of the naive and fearful. I mean, we've got people STILL shaking in their bunker at 40 feet. At least he learned a lesson: preparedness in general, and not Y2K analysis. Lot harder to be wrong about that, although with Mr Hyatt's track record I'd give him odds on to screw this up too.

-- Imso (lame@prepped.com), February 07, 2000.

Well, call me a "sucker" then, but he did give very good advice and what's more, he never made a dime off me. Not even a penny. I am in a much better position financially and economically, thanks to his advice. At least I don't have to worry about what I'll feed my children if there was a layoff in my family.

-- Marie (pray4peace@compuserve.com), February 07, 2000.

The pollys and the trolls will always scoff. They are too scared to visit a site such as Mr. Hyatt's, and even if they did they could not understand it. This is the only way to explain how they can read what Mr. Hyatt wrote and not be shaking in their boots. One line in particular stood out and is sending me to withdraw all of my cash out of the bank "roundhog predicts more winter".

-- Butt Nugget (catsbutt@umailme.com), February 07, 2000.

Angela,
Thanks for giving us the Sneak Peak.

My Dear Imso, Sir, as per your usual pattern. You have haplessly included me in one of your rather more asinine tyrades..

Perhaps, if you had one ounce of civlity running through you.You mght have had the thought to ask why I use the Nom de Plume of "Shakey in a bunker at forty feet" And as it is a reference I made to myself some 26 years ago, when talking with a friend about the ongoing Yom Kipper War in Israel. (I used it coming on this forum).

In reference, if you would have used some common sence (which I am finding so little of it, in some of the ' greater intellects' than you might imagine). You might very well deduce, that my primary concern just might be from radioactive fallout.

I think you would find two things that I have stated time and again on this forum. One of them being that Y2K is the trigger for all else that comes.Anetwo; it is the embeds which ARE the problem.

Computers handle, digetial information (usually for financial purposes). Most of it just electronic information being passed between them.

Embedded systems i. e. the computer chips, handle physical fuctions. And when you loose valves etc. You play hob trying to fix the problem by reprogramming or installig new software...You have to replace the valve/pipe line/refinery parts.... But I asume that you are still capable of understanding the relationship of one piece of operating equipment to another.

But apparently you still have as yetto learn to "let sleeping dogs lie"....

"As for me...I shall finish the Game"!

FactFinder and Imso and ButtNugget: You guys amaze me! You haven't given up on this forum, but come here to insult and ridicule others. Yet Michael Hyatt has completely revamped his website to be CURRENT and has done an excellent, forward-looking service to others in doing so. There is news there that one has to comb elsewhere to find.

He did NOT huckster anything, but offered to help people to get bargains, IF they wished. He was no more alarmist than Ed Yourdon was, whose forum this is.

One big advantage there is that topics are sorted neatly, so one can visit the topics of interest readily, and not have to sift through all sorts of things to find them.

The other big advantage is that smart alecks are NOT welcome to disrupt and to make others miserable with their meanness. It is adults talking with adults. It is a website minus pollys, trolls, nasties, and nuts! Hint, hint.

"It is website minus nuts."

Elaine: you gotta be kidding.
