Ukraine: Nuclear reactor decreases output due to fault

Text of report by Ukrainian news agency UNIAN

Kiev, 7th February: The energy output was decreased at the No 4 generating set at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant today at0110 [local time, 6th February 2310 gmt], UNIAN learnt at the information centre of the State Nuclear Control Administration.

The reactor's capacity was decreased by 20 per cent over a faultin its turbine control system. After the problem had been solvedthe reactor's capacity was gradually restored to a level closeto the nominal one. The fault did not cause changes in ther adiation level at or around the nuclear plant and did not pose any threat to its personnel.

Late at night on 5th February the No 5 generating set of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was stopped to test its automatic stopping system. Today at 0525 [local time, 0325 gmt]the generating set was reconnected to the country's energy grid. The reactor's output was 800 MW (80 per cent) at 10 o'clocktoday. The gradual increase in the reactor's output is continuing.

yep - Controller problem.

Y2K related? They aren't saying. Almost impossible (from here) to be able to tell. Could be anything, but it is the type of failure that you get from a bad controller. Fortunately, at rollover, we had few/none/no noticeable such errors.

If y2k-related, why would it happen in early Feb? (That's why it's not likely specifically y2k-related, but who knows fro sure.)
