Faulty VCDs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a friend who borrows some japanese drama serial VCDs. But when he plays back the discs, they all show a common problem: Slowdown in picture playback. The original owner had kept the discs for a few years. The discs were stacked together without casings, in other words , place one on top of the other. What my friend wonder is : is the degrade in the discs caused by not separating the discs? Is there some form of magnetic effects created by the the discs touching one another? Or did the original owner kept the discs in the wrong environment, such as under direct sunlight? Fungus and dust does not seem to be the cause of this problem. Anybody who had any ideas or similiar problem, please advise.
