Six Dead in German Train Crash

COLOGNE, Germany (AP) -- An express train derailed in western Germany early Sunday morning, killing at least six people and injuring more than 100.

Cologne police spokesman Peter Massen said 30 rescue vehicles were on the scene of the crash that occurred at 12:13 a.m. south of Cologne. Four helicopters were also dispatched to the scene to transport the injured, including 20 with critical injuries.

The train, which had started its trip in Amsterdam, had nine cars, but Massen said the number of actual passengers on the train was not immediately known. The train, which was on its way to Basel, Switzerland, derailed with at least one car flipping on its side, railways spokesman Manfred Ziegerath said.

This from ABC Australia:

"Police say the derailment was apparently caused by a line-switching error."

Entire story:

Six killed as train derails and smashes into house in Germany

At least six people have been killed and 50 others injured, 20 of them seriously, when an international passenger train was derailed at a station near Cologne in Germany.

German police say the accident happened just after midnight as the overnight service from Amsterdam to Basle, in Switzerland, was entering Bruehl station, some 15 kilometres from Cologne.

The train engine left the tracks and crashed into a house while several carriages fell into a ditch.

The train was carrying around 180 people.

Some passengers were trapped in the mangled wreckage for three hours before rescue workers could release them.

Police say the derailment was apparently caused by a line-switching error.
