Hazelwood Power Station in eastern Victoria was hopeful of getting one of its two failed electricity units repaired by later today, a company spokesman said.

Two generator units at the east Victorian plant broke down this week, adding to a supply crisis which resulted in compulsory power cuts across Victoria and South Australia.

Each of Hazelwood's eight units has a capacity to generate 200 megawatts of electricity.

Company spokesman Neil Lawson said one unit that broke down on Tuesday night was expected to be back on line by later today.

The other unit, which failed last night, could possibly be fixed tomorrow, although the problem was still being reviewed.

Industrial action has shut down the Yallourn Energy power plant, which supplies 20 per cent of the state's power, since January 10.

Pressure on supplies has also increased as a result of high air-conditioner use during a late summer heat wave.

The National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO) predicted a shortfall of between 300 and 600 megawatts of power.
