Y2K bug bites Hempstead County

HOPE, Ark.-Computers in three county offices have been bitten by the Y2K bug, but officials hope the glitch is repaired by today.

"Hopefully, it will be fixed this afternoon; the repairman has been working real hard," said Carolyn Neel, Hempstead County circuit clerk.

Computers in the circuit clerk's office, county clerk's office and treasurer's office did not roll over to the Year 2000 when systems were turned on Monday, despite $9,000 in software upgrades, said Velora B. Haltom, county clerk.

"We're still in 1999," Haltom said.

The program has halted work on payroll and claims. Relations Management Services of Duncanville, Texas, had a worker from its Conway, Ark., office trying to solve the problem Monday, but the company could not be certain when it would be repaired.

The company is responsible for the courthouse's computer hardware and software, Haltom said.

"The hardware man was here this morning and he did some minor things ... I've been trying to get in touch with someone about our software," Haltom said.

The software on the computers was not converted until Dec. 30, 1999, Haltom said.

However, county employees were hopeful there would be no computer-related problems.

"We thought we had prepared ... but I don't think there will be any major problems," Neel said.

The glitch has slowed things down, though.

"We're doing everything manually and hope they will be ready soon," Neel said.

In Haltom's office, W2s are being prepared on the 1999 program. "We need it before payroll next week. There's no way we could put 2000 payroll in '99," Haltom said.

The Quorum Court was scheduled to meet Monday night, but Haltom said payroll could be done by hand.

"Regular payroll is due at the end of the week. We'll do that by hand too, unless the computers are working," Haltom said.

Hempstead County still experiencing problems because of Y2K bug

HOPE, Ark.-Several computers in the Hempstead County courthouse are still malfunctioning as a result of Y2K.

"They think it was something left out of the program ... they are trying to repair it," said Velora B. Haltom, county clerk.

Computers in the county clerk's office, the circuit clerk's office and the treasurer's office did not roll over to the year 2000 when systems were turned on Monday.

The program has halted work on payroll and claims and is forcing employees to work manually.

Relations Management Services of Duncanville, Texas, has an employee from its Conway, Ark., office trying to repair the system.

The company is responsible for the courthouse's computer hardware and software.

A spokesman for the company could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

The software on the computers was not converted until Dec. 30, Haltom said.

No other local Y2K-related computer problems have been reported.
